Even More Bunnies in My Yard

Here's one of the newest batch of  bunnies. Do I dare ask how many batches a year rabbits have?…..best not to know, just enjoy they're adorable cuteness!  These photos were taken from inside, through the window.

New babies

What is it about this planter that attracts the bunnies?

Muncing on flowers

Luckily he's so little that all his munching won't do too much damage.

Each one is different - this one has a white spot on his head

Each rabbit is a little different.  This little guy has a white spot in the middle of his forehead. It's fun to get to recognize each individual rabbit as they grow.  I probably won't paint  his little white spot in a painting because it's not very common and would distract from the painting.  Good old artistic license – keeps the painting from looking like I splash white paint on his forehead!

Painting Daisies

Painting Daisies

I paint a lot of daisies. I love seeing them waving in the summer breezes in July & August. Their whites and yellows are so airy and fresh in the summer heat.

Daisies

I have several patches of them around the yard to paint en plein or photograph for later.  [En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.]

More daisies

Daisies are a simple flower to paint and I like that they can be painted in so many different styles and moods. Give them a grey undertone, and they have a softer, understated feel. Paint them with greens tints and they have a more woodsy feel. Punch up the yellow centers and they have a happier feel. They can be painted loosely  or finely detailed.  It's a great flower to paint!

Art of the Absurd

Art of the Absurd

I love art that is absurd, playful, and has a twist. It loosely fits into the art category of surrealism as defined by wikipedia:   "Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur…."   I've painted a number of paintings in the past that are a playfully absurd and they are really fun.  I will be finishing some new works in the future.

I love the food photography ads that pop up occasionally in the magazines and tv. I collect the print ads in a file for a jump start of creativity when I am having an artist block.  Here's one of my favorites:

Ad from the Cattlemen's Beef Board

This ad is from the Cattlemen's Beef Board.  Pieces of beef as mountains with blue cheese sauce snow tips and broccoli trees in the valley.  Fantastic!  I love the use of meat as mountains – lots of symbolism in that.  And who hasn't called broccoli "trees" to try to get a child to eat them.  Great fun art!

Musing on Slides to Digital Files

Musing on Slides to Digital Files

I was looking through the vast amount of Word Press plug ins this evening and got thinking about how much has changed in such a short time.  With a click or two, you can do what was impossible a few years ago.

When I started entering my art work into juried art shows, slides were the only acceptable form of entering your  work. I spent many hours dragging canvases outside  to get the proper lighting, hoping I was getting at least one good slide out of the film roll. It took several days before the slide film came back before I could see if I had any slide that would be good enough for getting into a show. More than one time, I had to quickly drag everything back outside and retake the slides and beg the photo shop to rush the order to make it  in time for the deadline.  Slides had to be label according to the show's requirements, and that varied from show to show. And to top it off, some shows didn't return your slides. Today, in under an hour, I can grab my digital camera, shoot a few shots and see immediately whether I have good photos, head to the computer and load up the photos to be on their way to be juried.  Heaven for an always late artist! I love being able to see instantly whether or not I have a decent photo.

One day I will figure out where to go to get photos from my slides so I have simple access to all of my work. Like other artists who straddle the changed technology, I have sold art work that the only record of it is in a slide.

I will be enjoying the simplicity and ease of my digital camera this weekend and sharing photos here later on this week.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
