Summer Pinecones

Posted in Reference Photos

Our pine trees are loaded with growing pinecones. They are still greenish and the scales are still closed up.

The birds and wildlife seem think they are delicious if they fall to the ground. I have seen the center stalk of the pine cone with all the scales devoured.

It’s fun to have reference photos of the difference stages of the pinecones growth. The basic shape remains the same. I probably would not paint the pine cones with the scales closed up, but I would definitely use these reference photos for composition and the lighting.

Raspberries in the Wild

Posted in Reference Photos

We have thorny raspberries bushes popping up all along the edges of the walkways in the neighborhood. I got a few photos before the birds noticed them too.

I am guessing that these are black raspberries since several managed to turn black before the birds got to them.

When taking reference photos of plants or flowers, I try to get a photo of the leaves as well. These beautiful raspberries may show up in future paintings.

Dependable Stella D’ora Lilies

Lilies are pretty reliable perennial flowers, but the Stella D’ora is a trooper. They came up year after year, not matter where they are planted. These beauties are up and blooming all around my yard right now.

I love their yellow blooms and their bright green leaves. I often take reference photos of these lilies for future drawings & paintings. Enjoy!

More Baby Bunnies

Posted in Reference Photos

Every spring we have batches of new baby bunnies in the yard. This year their nests are well hidden. You can kind of tell there’s a nest near by watching the Momma bunny arriving to the same area in the later afternoon/early evening.

It’s not long before we can spot of the brave babies wandering from the nest:

This little fella is palm size – about 3 – 4 inches. He stopped and sat still when he realized we were near by.

It didn’t take him long to realize we were no threat, and he got busy nibbling on leaves. We’ll keep our eyes for him and his siblings tomorrow.
