We’re getting pretty close to the end of spring and onward to summer. But the Azaleas don’t care! They are almost ready to burst open in this photo.
And there they go – full beautiful blooms! These beauties prefer to hang out under the evergreen trees.

Snowdrops are in full bloom this week. These interesting flowers look like tiny street lamps to me with their draping, chandelier shape. They are usually the first to show up in the early spring.
They are one of my favorite flowers to paint, especially after a long snowy winter.

What a cold, snowy winter this has been! It is a great time to paint the springtime I am waiting for. One of the signs that winter is over and spring is here is the blooming of the cherry trees. And that is what I painted last week!
Azure blue background is the color of the sky on a beautiful sunny spring day. I painted the branches in full bloom with lots of whites, pinks, purples, and even a touch of green and sienna brown. Hope looking at the painting brings warm thoughts of spring to you too.

Finished! Here is the finished drawing:
I am happy with how it turned out. I wanted to capture the simple beauty of daffodils in black and white. I kept the drawing to a roughly 5 x 7 space as I worked. After playing with different size matting and color, I opted for a slightly larger matting to focus the eye on the drawing. I also thought that the white matting helped to bring out better contrast between the light and dark of the drawing.

I’ve been working on the daffodil drawing:
I use the light sketched shapes to guide the drawing and the photos to check the details of the daffodils. I love working on the details of the drawing – it is really fun to see the image in my mind transform on to the paper. Stay tuned to part 3, the completion of the drawing.
