What’s on my easel this week? 6/17/2021

On my easel right now is a painting in progress of three pumpkins. I sketched the pumpkins on the canvas with chalk several weeks ago and set the canvas aside. This week I was in the mood to paint pumpkins 🙂

My favorite size canvas of the moment is a 16 x 8 or 8 x 4 inches long canvas. It gives focus to the subject being painted. Luckily my buyers agree, as these sizes are their favorites as well.

I like the composition of a pumpkin trio. It brings a nice balance to the horizontal canvas. I always have some fun at the end with the littlest pumpkin that you will see in my next update. So far in this painting I have painted in my mid tones and my initial darks and lights to give fullness to the pumpkins. Stay tuned to updates and the finished painting!

More Baby Bunnies

Every spring we have batches of new baby bunnies in the yard. This year their nests are well hidden. You can kind of tell there’s a nest near by watching the Momma bunny arriving to the same area in the later afternoon/early evening.

It’s not long before we can spot of the brave babies wandering from the nest:

This little fella is palm size – about 3 – 4 inches. He stopped and sat still when he realized we were near by.

It didn’t take him long to realize we were no threat, and he got busy nibbling on leaves. We’ll keep our eyes for him and his siblings tomorrow.

Fuchsia Gladiolus Painting

Hello again! Hope you are all well as I get my blog back on track! My latest painting is a beautiful stalk of dark fuchsia gladiolus.

Purple gladiolus

My inspiration for this painting is the tall stalks of beautiful gladiolus in a neighbor’s yard. I love watching the buds unroll into tall, full, ruffly flowers. I painted these beauties as a fully unrolled stalks in all their magnificant glory. 

I used mixes of purples, red-violet, blues, and greens with touches of yellow and cream for the highlights. The dark black-green background helps to pop the colors of the flowers and give the painting depth. 

I painted these glads on a 8 x 16 inches gallery wrapped canvas. This size canvas is very popular with my buyers. It’s the perfect size to add a little original artwork to your home or office. This original acrylic painting can be found on my etsy shop: SibStudio

Starting New Tree Painting

During one of our walks, we came across this old tree stump. It is slowly decaying, leaving interesting patterns of peeling bark, holes, and crumbling insides. I took a few photos to capture it as it is now before the winter storms moved in.

I started a painting of this tree stump today. I decided on a 8 x 16 inches canvas to keep the focus on the tree stump. I left out the 2 trees in the foreground. While they frame the stump nicely in the photo, they also take away the focus on the tree stump.

I took a bit of artistic license for the background, muting the background trees, adding a bit of sky & clouds, and adding some interest to the ground around the tree stump. I have drawn in some of the details of the stump with a white charcoal pencil. The painting of the tree stump is next. Stay tuned 🙂

Celebrating Avocados

My newest painting on Etsy

This is my newest painting on my SibStudio shop on Etsy. I had some avocados ripening on the counter. I was looking at them, noting their rich green color and bumpy surface. I decided they need to have a portrait painted of their avocado beauty.

I used a peachy beige for the background to keep the painting warm and inviting. I used greens, browns, yellows, and purples for the avocados. One of the avocados was nearby for reference and inspiration.
